Bocateca is an alternative dictionary created with the aim of having the most accurate and real-life collection of words and expressions that can be found in Spanish. The dictionary contains: - words found in academic dictionaries - slang words - fixed-phrases and expressions - neologisms - any type of word out of the categories above that is used in Spanish
This site accepts any word that is used by the Spanish-speaking communty (including misspellings) given that the philosophy of the website supports the sermo vulgaris (voice of the people) as the real language, together with the evolution of the languages for whatever the reasons are (language in contact, word economy, etc).
A peculiar thing is the way it works. The users of the site are the ones who submit the words, the definition, examples and related words what makes it a free dictionary. When registering or submitting a word, users can write down their location, but it will not appear anywhere because the site's team want the Spanishto be one single language, and the rest are regionalism, but all in all the Spanish language is one in itself.
Behind the site there's a team that rejects certain words and definitions that are extremely offensive or nonsenses.
Users can vote the words, either up or down, and people can see what are the more accepted and which are the least. These users can register voluntarily in order to select which words may be suitable to be published.
