Black Confederates tells the story of Black Southerners who served within the Confederate military units and contains documented source material drawn from the official records, veteran narratives and out-of-print publications. This fine work contains over 35 photos and illistrations. Contemporary articles are written by historians such as Dr.Charles Harper of North Carolina State University and Professor Jay Hoar of the University of Maine at Famington. An annotated bibliography is included for thsoe who would like to do further research into this intriguing subject. Also, additional volumes will be forthcoming.

The debate over the role of Blacks who served in Confederate armies has not subsided. Historians remain in disagreement over the numbers of Black Southerners involved and whether significant military contributions were made. Nevertheless, official records, newspaper articles, veterans' accounts, and other surviving documents suggest that large numbers of slaves and freed men served as southern allies-and, in some instances, as soldiers and sailors for the Confederacy.
