Description
Located in the "Raisin Capital of The World", Selma, California. Bird Heaven Aviaries got its start back in early 2000. Michael had been breeding birds for the last 16 years and one day, decided to ask Justin if he would like to handfeed some Cockatiels. Justin had never handfed before, so Michael showed him the ropes and oddly enough Justin was hooked. Since then they've raised everything from English Budgies to African Greys, Macaws & Cockatoo's.
Michael has raised everything from Finches, Lovebirds, Parakeets, Cockatiels & Diamond Doves. It wasn't until Bird Heaven Aviaries was founded that both he and Justin decided to try their luck raising the bigger birds. They had always had an interest in the bigger birds and it wasn't until Bandit, Justin's infamous loudmouth African Grey came into their lives that the decision to raise larger parrots was cemented. Bandit was Justin's first parrot. Working long hours managing a seafood restaurant back home he never really had time for pets. Working 12 hour days didn't help either. He did have his adorable Calico Cat, The infamous "Lizzie Birdsworth". Justin adopted Lizzie from the local dog pound where she was one of 3 cats available. The other 2 were huge tomcats and Lizzie was the only one who was playing around. For those of you who are wondering, Lizzie Birdsworth was a character on one of Justin's favorite TV shows. Prisoner - Cell Block H. Lizzie was an elderly inmate who was always getting into things. With Lizzie the cat always getting into trouble he thought it would be an appropriate name.
What started out as a small hobby, has now blossomed into Justin's full time "hobby". Michael works fulltime too at his other job, but does spend alot of his time here with the babies. Raising everything from Cockatiels, Parrotlets, Amazons, Blue & Gold Macaws, Hahns Macaws, White Bellied Caiques, Sun Conures, Green Cheek Conures, Meyers Parrots & Justin's special interest, African Ringnecks. Justin is on the look out for African Ringnecks and is working on getting a breeding program going. It truly is a labor of love, a love that is apparent in every baby that they raise. Although they have many breeder birds, they also have within the flock some companion birds. These include Bandit & Vincent, two male African Greys. Bandit is 4 and Vincent is 7. Then there is Ryley. Ryley is an 11 year old Mollucan Cockatoo. Ryley & Vincent both came from the same house. We also have Rico, Rico is a 2 year old Blue & Gold Macaw. Very loud & Racuous but totally lovable and loves to cuddle.
