Site Philosophy: Many online jewelry stores do not have the expenses of a fancy, "brick and mortar" establishment in a mall or shopping center, so can pass these savings on to the customer. In some cases, they don't actually stock their merchandise in advance of sale so also save paying interest on inventory loan charges, a large expense. For example, we list over 60,000 diamonds from major wholesalers and sell them at about half jewelry store prices.
Discount Jewelry Story
Buying jewelry is often a major investment, and the key to finding the best jewelry discount is to know the correct value of the piece in question.
One method of establishing value is through an appraisal from an independent gemologist, preferably certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Such appraisals are personal opinions based on study and experience, so can vary from one appaiser to another.
The appraisals figures are usually given as "Suggested List Retail", being the price the vendors would ususally be asking for the item. However, their operating costs can vary greatly, so some may have room to come down on the price to close the sale. But keep in mind that, if the asking price is already close to wholesale (as in our case), there is little or no room to reduce it any further.
What about advertised prices of "50% off"?
The standard markup on new jewelry is three times the wholesale cost. And some years ago the JC Penney chain was charged with fraud for offering "50% off" jewelry on which they had tripled the wholesale price. They escaped prosecution by showing that it was a common practice among discount jewelry vendors. And it still is!
We can price all our contemporary jewelry at 50% off the Suggested List Retail Price of 3X wholesale, because we keep our overhead low. We don't advertise, have no expensive store front and only stock our Antique and Estate Jewelry in advance of sale.
