Description
History of Beechwood Cheese
The present site of Beechwood Cheese Factory had its beginnings as early as 1894, when two brothers, James and Daniel O'Connel, bought out their brother John's "upper" and "lower" cheese factories and moved them to one centralized location, -a vacated blacksmith's building. Here they made butter and cheese, whichever was more profitable for the season.
After a series of owners, Walter Linder took possession. He is responsible for an intentional demolition fire and the creation of a new red brick building in 1933, which houses the business today.
In 1944, the DeLand Cheese Co. took ownership and hired Norbert Heise as head cheesemaker, who in turn leased the operation in 1946. After financial difficulty, DeLand Cheese lost the business to Citizens Bank of Sheboygan, which then sold it to Heise and wife Evangeline in 1956. (She is responsible for the lush ivy encasing the west wall.)
