Barber of C Ville - Cape Cod, Barnstable Barber Salon
Description
Gary Gomes - Proprietor
My name is Gary Gomes and I am the proprietor of the Barber of C'ville. I was born on the Cape in 1959 at Cape Cod Hospital. My parents and grandparents lived in Cotuit where I grew up. My dad was the Fire Chief when I was a kid and I loved to go to the station and climb on the trucks. My mom was very active with the ambulance. The Cotuit Kettleers played in Lowell Park every summer and I was there for camp and was the bullpen catcher. The Cotuit High Grounds Golf Course was across the street from my house and my friends and I would often play.
I graduated from Barnstable High School in 1977 where I played football and baseball. BHS was much smaller then but I remember it as huge. I worked for the movie theaters with a bunch of my friends who still live and work on the Cape. When I finished high school in 1977, I started barber school in Boston. I would take the bus every morning, then catch the "T" and walk the rest of the way. I worked several part time jobs when I got home.
Once I finished barber school, I worked on Main Street with Don Villani, then in Eastham until I found work at a shop in the bowling alley on Main Street in Hyannis. Eventually I worked for a man named Don Smith in what is now a Thai Restaurant on Barnstable Road. In 1981 I got my big break and was able to take over a defunct shop on Rte 28 in Centerville. Rene and Marcel Poyant owned the building and he gave me a chance. I was only 21 at the time.
