Description
Our story started in 1912 when Bank of America (Asia) was founded by prominent Chinese businessmen as the Bank of Canton - the first Chinese-owned bank in the territory. Its growth paralled Hong Kong's development and we thrived until the Great Depression in the 1930s, and the Second World War in the 40s disrupted our operations. Former staff rebuilt the bank when Hong Kong was liberated in 1945, and soon we were back in business.
Over the next four decades, we continued to expand - increasing our product offerings, establishing a network of branches and building a stable customer base.
Following the acquisition by Security Pacific National Bank in 1988, Bank of Canton was renamed Security Pacific Asian Bank. In 1992, we became part of Bank of America upon Security Pacific Corporation's merger with Bank of America Corporation, and changed our name to Bank of America (Asia) Ltd. in 1993. In 1998, Bank of America Corporation merged with NationsBank Corporation to form the new Bank of America. In 2001, we changed our Chinese name to make it more closely aligned with our Bank of America company name.
