Ballpark Digest -- Chronicling the Culture of Baseball

Description

Ed Smith Stadium is a very basic ballpark, serving as the spring home of the Cincinnati Reds and the regular-season home of the Sarasota Reds (Class A; Florida State League). Built in 1989 as the spring home of the Chicago White Sox, Ed Smith Stadium lacks many of the amenities you'd expect in spring training, such as a covered concourse or expanded concessions. It makes sense, therefore, that the Reds would be seeking a new spring-training base: Ed Smith lacks the flash of any newer spring facility, and the bland facility also dampens any local enthusiasm for the Sarasota Reds.

Turner Field was built in the spirit of retro ballparks, at least from the exterior: inside the ballpark is all business. Though there is a lot to like about the ballpark, it tends to be a little busy when it comes to attractions, and it lacks the one thing that makes Southern baseball such a delight: an abundance of places for fans to gather and chew the fat. In the end, that lack of public gathering spots and a generic approach to the game makes Turner Field a good, but not great, place to watch a ballgame.

Sporting one of the most dramatic views from any ballpark, Campbell's Field in downtown Camden is surely one of the most scenic ballparks in minor-league baseball. With the Ben Franklin Bridge outside of right field and the downtown Philadelphia skyline past the left-field corner, a Camden Riversharks (independent; Atlantic League) or Rutgers University game at Campbell's Field provides a great family experience.
