Title

San Diego Doula Services and Childbirth Education by Tabitha Trotter

Description

I began doula'ing in 1992. At that time, I'd given birth to 2 children, and didn't know what a doula was...or that I was doing doula work. In 1994, I was pregnant with twins. I had 3 months of bedrest before I delivered. While on bedrest, I was discouraged that there weren't any childbirth classes offered to bedrest patients.

The twins were not my own. I was a gestational surrogate for a couple in Jerusalem. After the twins' birth, I began my own surrogacy agency. Part of my responsibilities as a Gestational Surrogacy Coordinator were to attend the births of the surrogates in my agency (mostly, my responsibility was to provide the hospital with the appropriate paperwork to declare parentage, and to run interference if there were any issues that needed to be settled). While attending these births, I helped the surrogate find comfortable positions, provided food and drink to her "partners" (including the parents of the baby), and informed the surrogate and the intended parents of their options regarding procedures and tests that they may be candidates for.

In 1997, I gave birth to my seventh baby (Surrogacy #4). I learned about Certified Doulas through the childbirth class I attended with the baby's parents. I stayed after class to learn more about becoming certified. I felt I was doing the work with my surrogates anyway, so maybe I could offer my services with the official-sounding title of Certified Doula.
