His art training began in high school and college courses in freehand and life drawing. He earned his bachelor's degree at Illinois Institute of Technology, studying under Mies van der Rohe. He studied interior design and presentation drawing at Chicago's Institute of Design (successor to the Bauhaus). In the late 70s he taught a senior architectural design studio at the University of Illinois.
