Additional Information

This website belongs to the AVP, a political party in Aruba. The abbreviation stands for Arubaanse Volkspartij, which can be translated to Aruba's People Party. The party is a Christian Democratic party that has been in existence for more than 60 years. It has a reputation of a party which has risen to the occasion many times and with a very clear and progressive vision. The so called “Status Aparte”, which indicates that the island is an independent entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was an idea coined by the early leaders of the party in the early years of the 20th century. Aruba is today an equal partner, with the Netherlands (Continental) and the Netherlands Antilles (5 other Caribbean Islands). In 1986, when Aruba got the “Status Aparte”, it was an AVP prime minister who guided the island into its new era. The party’s vision has always been that the Aruban people can and will succeed on their terms and hard labor. The Aruban people are known around the world for their friendliness, also their hard work and progressiveness. The island is considered one of the foremost touristic destinations in the Caribbean and the world. The view for the future of the party is one in that the Aruban people must retain their hold on their future and must decide their on their relations with the EU remaining within the kingdom and retaining their "Status Aparte". Domestically, its vision for the future, aims for a fair distribution of the island nation’s wealth. The economic progress has been on the rise for the last twenty years, but the social progress has not reached the level desired. This is a very important aspect of the party's vision. The AVP has been in the government in 3 occasions since 1986 and is currently the largest opposition party (40% of the seats in the parliament). The next elections are set for the latter half of 2009. The party is currently under the leadership of Michael G. Eman, better known as Mike. Under his leadership the party has undergone an extensive renovation process from within and externally, e.g. in how it addresses important issues from the opposition. A great part of the renovation effort went into strengthening of the party from within. One of the most important aspects of the renovation, includes the rejuvenation of the party's scientific think tank, FESCA and the creation of the "Fundacion Instituto di Formacion Politico Digna Lacle Herrera". The latter is an institute which focuses on the training and upgrading of its members. This institute provides training in political, economical, financial and social (among other) issues in order to prepare the party, as a whole, for leading the country in a responsible and professional manner, well into the next decade. The AVP has extensive international relations within and outside the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Within, the AVP has extensive relations with other like-minded parties in Curaçao, Bonaire and the SSS-islands. The relation with the CDA, the Christian Democratic party of the Netherlands, has been strengthened in the last years. On a level outside the Kingdom, the AVP has extensive relations with the ODCA and the IDC-CDI (Centrist/Christian Democrat International. In ODCA, the regional organization of Christian Democrats, the AVP holds the position of secretary for the Caribbean Region. In the IDC-CDI, the AVP holds the position if vice-president for continental America.
