Morro Canyon Ranch started way back in 1998 when we ( the Shanley family ) bought 113 acres of land three miles out of Morro Bay, California.
The following spring we cleared weeds and dilapidated fencing from our new property and planted 4000 avocado trees on about 24 of those acres. Our objective was to provide you with the best tasting avocado you have ever eaten. Sort of like a vine ripened tomato from the back yard. Our back yard has 4000 avocado trees in it; what we don't eat we send to our friends.
We have two separate groves on the property. The lower grove is a south facing, 15 acre, rolling, alluvial plane drained by Morro Creek. The upper grove is up and over our oak forest covered hill and is a south facing, 9 acre bowl, with about 1200 trees on terraces. Both plantings are irrigated with Micro sprinklers from two wells located near the creek. Our grove is not certified organic but we only use mineral oil (a recognized organic treatment) and a spray that is in the organic certification process, for treatment for thrips and mites when we have them. Our preferred treatment is to let the natural predators of insect pests keep our groves clean and we plant cover crops specifically formulated to attract and sustain the good guys.
