Janet Menhennett is bringing power to the people – the power to buy top-quality glasses at affordable prices.
Menhennett’s website, AusSpecs.com.au, is a direct response to what she considered a "fixed" system that kept the price of prescription glasses outrageously and artificially high.
Until about four years ago, Australians could buy prescription glasses only from a licensed optometrist. Basic prescription glasses cost around $300 Australian, or nearly half the average weekly wage in Australia. A more complicated, multi-field prescription pair could easily run up to $1,000.
Menhennet recalls feeling “ripped off” when she was charged $450 for a pair of prescription eyeglasses -- a pair she can now sell for $60.
Thanks to new rules in effect throughout most of Australia, residents can buy eyeglasses from non-optometrists as long as they have a prescription from a licensed professional.
“We jumped at that opportunity to sell good quality, affordable glasses, and decided to create a website,” says Menhennett.

It’s quickly become a crowded niche, but AusSpecs.com.au was one of the first two sites into the online prescription glasses market, and is now reaping the early-entrant advantage.

Clients view Menhennett’s shop as the go-to place for affordable prescription glasses and other eyewear, such as prescription sunglasses. She employs three staff optometrists and buys eyeglass lenses and eyewear frames from manufacturers around the world.
Menhennett isn’t shortsighted about what keeps her glasses customers happy. “On the web, it all comes down to price," she says.

Menhennett isn't planning big changes for AusSpecs.com.au. She created the business to give prescription glasses buyers good value, and that’s what she’s going to keep on doing.
She doesn’t brag about sales figures or online traffic growth. Instead, Menhennett measures success by how much she can save his eyewear customers. One recent glasses customer, a single mother of three, wrote to tell Menhennett that she saved $1,000 buying glasses on her website.
