AutoNation is America's largest automotive retailer both on and off the Internet. Founded in 1996, AutoNation is a chain of auto dealerships which is headed under one company and networked through their website. While the company is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, their service area covers most major areas of the United States.

The website features a full-service array of resources on buying vehicles, presented in a dynamic, interactive interface. These features include:
- Finding a dealer -- Search for an affiliated dealer in your area.
- Finding services and parts -- Search for affiliated service providers which can supply parts and accessories, maintenance, and collision repair.

Once an on-line vehicle request has been submitted through the site, a customer can get their vehicle within several days, based on local vehicle availability. Customers may pick up their purchased vehicle directly, or for an additional fee may even have it delivered to their home.
All data submitted through the website is protected with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to ensure privacy.
History
AutoNation was originally a chain of used car mega-stores under the brand name of "AutoNation USA", which were designed to compete directly with rival company CarMax. After 1999, the company decided to close its direct dealerships and instead focus on acting as an agency for conventional auto dealerships throughout the market. However, they make it clear that they are not a brokerage or a referral service, which would add additional cost to the dealer's prices.
Before 1999, the company was known as Republic Industries, Inc.

The current acting CEO as of 2006 is Mike Jackson. Recent announcements have been made to the effect that they will be focusing on selling BMW, Mercedes and Lexus vehicles, based on an anticipation of higher high dealer inventories and the greater demand for these brands.
