There’s a spirit along the mid-coast of Maine that speaks to the passing down of tradition, the connection to family and community, and the belief that the things we make carry our history.
Having raised their children and built successful legal careers in Boston, the Graces were looking for an enterprise that could support a year-round move to their longtime summer home on Swans Island, Maine. The New England tradition and craft of fine, hand-woven wool blankets seemed richly deserving of revival. So they studied weaving, quit their legal practices, moved to the coast of Maine, and got to work on their first line of blankets. The results drew national attention. Over the following 10 years the Graces sold as many as they could produce.
Early in 2004, John and Carolyn Grace passed the legacy on to their friends Bill Laurita and Jody Spanglet, former Waldorf School teachers who moved to Maine for the promise of a simpler life, to be closer to family and to immerse themselves in the crafts tradition of Maine. They have continued to make blankets that are, above all, functional, sturdy enough to survive generations of use, and a pleasure to own.
