- The original CRNet innovation gateway was established by the Ian Clunies Ross Memorial Foundation and began operating in 1996. With little promotion the gateway began to develop a strong user group and from 1997 through to 1998 more than a million page hits were recorded. In late 1998 Science Media, with support from Balance-Infosystems, took over the gateway to pursue the original goals set by the Foundation in creating the site to promoting Australian capabilities in scientific and technological innovation.
- The gateway is a comprehensive open source of information on Australian innovation.
