Description
The Bengal is a relatively new breed of cat. They were officially registered with The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1983.
It is a unique breed in that it was created by mating a wild Asian leopard cat (ALC) with an American tabby. The goal of breeding Bengals is to preserve the wild, exotic look of the Asian Leopard Cat while creating a domestic cat with a desirable temperament. Very early generation Bengal cats possess physical characteristics closely related to their ancestor, the ALC. Wild personality traits can be guided toward a desirable domestic cat with the proper rearing as a kitten.
Cat organizations frequently restrict very early generation Bengals from the show ring. A Bengal must be fourth generation or more to compete in TICA.
