Music: Orient vs. Occident
Oriental music has an oral tradition -which means that it is taught and passed down to the next generations orally. Whereas, Western music is written down, this makes the process of teaching and communication easier. Moreover, while Western music is based on the minor and major scales; Asian music, based on the complex Raga system has as many as 72 scales.
Asian musicians put great stress on the importance of adding emotion to music. Microtones, intervals of less than an equally spaced semitone, are used for a smooth articulation of feelings.
