- The land we know as Australia has its roots in time immemorial. It was once part of the ancient landmass of Gondwana which held the southern subcontinents together, and there is evidence of human habitation from over 40 thousand years ago. Today it is home both to the Aboriginal people and to immigrants from all over the world who arrived in more recent times. Even in previous millennia the land was populated rather widely, not just around the fertile coastline but also throughout the vast interior, which nowadays is largely desert.
