The Zen Merchant began as Triptych Gifts & Home Decor in July of 1998. We opened a 400 square foot little residential/commercial converted space in our San Diego community of South Park. In our beginnings, we focused primarily on Indonesian handicraft, sculpture and art. Once established in our neighborhood, we decided to venture out and present our gift and home accessories products to the rest of the world. We expanded our product lines to include Laurel Burch products, Shadow & Light Aromatherapy products, world music, and a wide variety of other fantastic and worldly home decor ideas. It was now time to go online. We began building our web site and went live in 1999. We quickly established our niches for each product line and grew our customer base for each.
One of the fantastic things about conducting business on the Internet is that you can appeal to several different niche markets and pull them together to compliment each other. By doing so, we're able to introduce product lines to our customers that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
It wasn't long before our site was recognized as a leading resource for Shadow & Light aromatherapy and Laurel Burch products. This allowed us to expand our 400 square foot little shop to about a 900 square foot little shop. Although still small, we realized that our online business was quickly outpacing our in store retail sales for the Shadow & Light and Laurel Burch product lines and we then acquired a warehouse and hired more personnel to continue our online operations.
