Title

Apple Day Festival on the Isle of Wight

Description

Apple Day 2005

5000 people attended this year's Apple Days Festival weekend on 25th & 26th September at Afton Park on the Isle of Wight - the first Apple Festival of the year.

Over the festival weekend event organiser, Barney Barnes, described the atmosphere as "Relaxed, interesting, entertaining and very busy - if that's possible!" Good weather on the Sunday in particular saw large crowds gathered around the apple pruning and pressing displays with apple picking equally popular. The Apple Marquee was bursting with people keen to see the famous Island apple, the Howgate Wonder, and over 100 other varieties of apple displayed by Brighstone apple experts, David and Alison Harding.

As well as celebrating English apples the Apple Days Festival has become a showcase for local Island producers, artists and crafts people. All reported a brisk trade with many mainland visitors coming to the Island for the day to visit the festival, as well as local Islanders. There were fun activities for the children, from story-telling to circus workshops, but the launch of the new 'Afton Animal Safari' in the lovely gardens at Afton Park went down particularly well with the youngsters, as did the Apple Olympics on the Sunday.
