Question of the Day: Head lice
An earlier item today mentioned treatments for head lice, and though I'm sorry to bring it up again, because it probably makes you feel itchy, let's find out: Has your child ever had head lice? Click on a response below, and use your browser's back button if you want to select more than one.
#8: Mosaic of Thought
The seventh selection in our series of "Ten Texts for Summer Learning," in which we'll take a book a day from the Harried Parent's Book Club and give some guidelines on how to use it for a little summer enrichment course for your child, is Mosaic of Thought -- a book that offers information on the latest reading research and ways to use it to help children connect to the words they read. "Teach Your Child Reading Comprehension" offers quick tips on encorporating the book's teacher-aimed material into your reading routine with your child.
Lice are laughing off pesticides
Head lice, those creepy little critters that make their home in your child's hair, have been in the news this week for being particularly hardy. A study of Welsh schoolchildren found that four-fifths of the lice plucked from their heads had become immune to the most common pesticide-based treatments. Since pesticide shampoos can be problematical for children with special needs anyway, the news that the buggies are finding ways to survive them offers even more of an incentive to try less toxic, more effective treatments like tea tree oil or smothering the lice with mayo or olive oil. Other lice-related resources on this Parenting Special Needs site include help for nit-picking with sensory-integration-disordered kids; resources to teach your kids about what's crawling on their noggins; and a look at whether lice should really keep kids out of school.
