A Brief Website History

This website started it's humble beginnings in 1994 when I was studying for my Master's Degree in Adelaide. We were provided with extremely generous facilities, including our own 'room' - which was set up like an open plan office, with PC's on each desk, and office furniture.

We were encouraged to experiment with or own computer network - connected to the University's link to the internet. At this stage we were running Mosaic version 1 on Unix (Netscape didn't exist then).

We had our own servers www.spillane.aitec.edu.au - for Uni of SA students www.marple.aitec.edu.au - for Adelaide Uni students and it was here that my original site was hosted.

1994 Version 1 - on www.marple.aitec.edu.au/~grill (basic pages, cv - no frames)

1996 Version 2 - moved to our Alumni garlic.aitec.edu.au/~grill - with improved pages and my CV in Adobe Acrobat format.

1999 Version 3 - moved to my BigPond server when I joined Telstra users.bigpond.com/A_Grill/

1999 Version 4 - I moved the pages to Telstra's WebAction server, and registered the domain name http://www.andrewgrill.com/ at the same time.

2000 Version 5 - A major makeover with custom menu graphics and improved navigation. I have also purchased a "Real Names" Internet Keyword (Andrew Grill) which made finding the site easier.

2000 Version 6 - Another major makeover converting the site to active server pages (ASP) and changing the background to white and removing the 'menu' frame which did not display correctly on smaller monitors.

In September 2000, Olympic Games pictures captured at various Olympic events in Sydney were hosted at http://www.andrewgrill.com/olympics and these pages continue to be the most popular part of the site.

In 2003 the site was moved from Telstra to Webcentral (www.webcentral.com.au)

2004 Version 7 - The site had a major graphic overhaul (using the graphic template as it appears today) and new content was created.

In mid 2005, the site was moved from webcentral (AU web host) to Fasthosts.co.uk With the move to Fasthosts, multiple subdomains were created and appear below in the related links section.

Discussion

The third level domains in the related domains area may be overkill? Especially since the system doesn't yet support automatically generated pages for third level urls. --User:Ray King | talk 21:51, 6 September 2006 (PDT)
