Company history
As one of the first major companies to sell products online, it began as an online bookstore, but soon diversified its product lines considerably. Amazon was initiated by Jeff Bezos in 1995. Company was so named "Amazon" after the world's most ample river. One of the hottest stocks of the 1990's, Amazon survived the burst of the dot-com bubble. It announced its first gains in the fourth quarter of 2002. Earnings continued to bloom due to product diversity and international presence: US$3.9 billion in 2002, US$5.3 billion in 2003, US$6.9 billion in 2004, US$8.5 billion in 2005, and US$10.7 billion in 2006.
