Description
Alpacas of Wessex was started up in 1999 by John Gaye and Michael Brooke. John had bought his first alpacas in 1996 when Sir John Wilsey and he had started up Blackmore Vale Alpacas. Michael, whose property was only just over the hill from Blackmore Vale Alpacas bought his first alpacas in 1998 and shortly after that John invited Michael to join him in setting up a new company – Alpacas of Wessex.
The herd size in those early days consisted of about 14 females and a few males. A year later saw the first overseas stud male arrive. Bought in conjunction with Blackmore Vale Alpacas, Snowtex was purchased from Canada and thus started an immediate improvement in our breeding programme.
During the foot and mouth epidemic in 2001 John and Michael decided to visit the USA in order to seek out some more prestigious bloodlines and from that visit three more excellent stud males arrived. This was followed shortly afterwards by further purchases from Australia of both females and stud males bringing to the herd even more diversity in bloodlines and proven genetic strengths.
