Description
Excerpted from the website:
- Utrecht has a scintillating past. It all began in 47 AD when the Romans built a castellum, or fortress, as part of their reinforcements along the river Rhine. The name of the city probably originates from the combination of the words Uut (downstream) and Trecht (fordable place). At the end of the 7th century, the Northumbrian missionary Willibrord settled in Utrecht.
