- The Sonoma County Abalone Network, or S.C.A.N. is a non profit corporation located in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California dedicated to the preservation and conservation of abalone. Formed in 1994 by George Lawry, S.C.A.N. has a membership of approximately 300 and is supported by their dues of $10.00 a year. S.C.A.N. is an organization created by and for sport abalone divers and gatherers. Among S.C.A.N.'s activites are surveys of abalone or creel counts in cooperation with the California Dept of Fish and Game, Court watch activities involving serious instances of abalone poaching for commercial profit, legislation affecting abalone harvest, education of abalone harvesters regarding regulations and safe and sound methods of harvesting abalone, and cooperation with law enforcement officials in detecting serious violations of state law on the harvest of abalone.
