Title

Afrikan-American Cultural Awareness Association

Description

AACAA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit cultural and educational organization. Our mission as an Arts organization is to provide cultural arts enrichment and awareness to communities throughout Connecticut through the use of education, visual art, performing arts, conferences, workshops, and special events.

The organization has a eight member Board of Advisors and two active officers. It boasts membership from persons of the New Milford, Danbury, Norwalk, and Stamford communities, with the majority of the members residing in the Danbury community. Since the AACAA stands as the only organization of its kind in the area, it has had the opportunity to initiate and pioneer a variety of cultural programs and activities in the Danbury area. Some of the on-going programs that the organizations sponsors are the Annual Kwanzaa Celebration, The Annual Cultural Extravaganza, The Annual Juneteenth Celebration, The Annual Summer Drum Call Program at designated Housing Authority sites, the after school Drum Call program in the Danbury Public Schools, and The Annual Nguzo Saba Scholarship Award. Along with these programs, the AACAA sponsored the Sounds of Afrika school tour, which set precedence by being the first cultural troupe to perform at each Danbury Public School's facilities. Another activity has been the lecture and workshop series, where representatives of the AACAA visit schools and community centers and educate audiences on subjects such as multiculturalism, diversity in the curriculum, Afrikan/Afrikan-American awareness and enrichment, Rites of Passage, and Afrikan dance and drumming as healing therapies

It is because of the diversity in programming, community outreach efforts, sponsorship and contributions over the last 10 years that the AACAA has been able to serve over 50,000+ people in the Greater Danbury.
