- Matt de la Peña. As a kid coming up in San Diego, Matt de la Peña was the quintessential gym rat. At the ripe age of fourteen he set off on his own, hopping various buses in search of the best run in the city. But when he stumbled into the renowned Municipal Gym in Balboa Park one summer morning, he found more than just top-notch competition, he found a second home.
