Title

Witherspoon on Theology and Science

Description

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

William Witherspoon was a high school student in 1926 when he began a lifelong study of the physical sciences. By the 1930s, he had also developed a deep interest in theology. His studies led him to challenge the accepted belief of the day that science and theology are incompatible. "That can’t be correct," he thought, "both seek a common denominator -- Truth."

I challenge Christian theologians to rethink Christian doctrines that have come down to us from the fourth and fifth centuries in the light of this age of science and technology. I have tried to do my rethinking and have written my thoughts in the papers on this website. Note how closely they follow the Biblical account.

The breakthroughs that fire the imagination and change our lives are usually made by men and women who are still in their 30s and 40s. The younger scientists are usually less invested than their elders in the intellectual dogma of the past. This is not true of Witherspoon; he is now in his 90s but his perspective on science and theology is as fresh and insightful and provocative as any being considered today.
