Based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States Rohm and Haas was founded in 1907 and incorporated in the year 1917 by German Chemists Otto Rohm and Otto Haas. Rohm and Haas provides various specialty materials primarily for use in the building and construction, electronics, packaging and paper, industrial and other, transportation, household and personal care, water, and food markets. The company has 6 divisions, which includes Coatings, Monomers, Performance Chemicals, Electronic Materials, Salt, and Adhesives and Sealants. Coatings division offers architectural and functional coatings, including acrylic emulsion polymers; various additives, such as thickeners, extenders, and opacifiers; powder coatings, which includes epoxy, polyester, silicone, and acrylic powder coatings, as well as lamineer, a low temperature curing coating. Monomers division produces methyl methacrylate, acrylic acids, associated esters, and specialty monomer products. Performance Chemicals division offers various plastic additives, including acrylic-based impact modifiers and processing aids, and tin-based stabilizers and lubricants; antimicrobials, dispersants, acrylic emulsions, and various other technologies; and anion and cation ion exchange resins, sodium borohydride and related technologies, salt-forming bases, and adsorbents. Electronic Materials division supplies specialty chemicals and materials, such as photoresists, solder masks, electroless, and electrolytic copper; provides materials and technology for integrated circuit packaging, connectors, and industrial finishing; and technology for creating integrated circuits, such as photoresists, developers, removers, antireflective coatings, chemical mechanical planarization pads, and slurries. Salt division produces salts through vacuum pan production, solar evaporation, or mining. Adhesives and Sealants division offers laminating adhesives, heat seal coatings, cold seal adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesives, primers and coatings, rubber-to-metal bonding adhesives, and flocking agents.

History

1907 – Two young German Chemists and Entrepreneurs Otto Rohm and Otto Haas partners with Esslingen to manufacture and sell leather bate, Oropon to tanners.

1909 – Haas establishes an office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

1917 – The company reaches $1 million in sales, the company sewers its German ties with the onset of World War I.

1924 – The company partners with Karl Albert Company and markets synthetic resins

1936 – Introduces polymethacrylate under the brand name Plexiglas which was an instant hit with army, being used in aircrafts

1940’s – Company sees rapid growth due to high demand of Plexiglas sheet in military aircraft; the company registers nine fold increase in its sales

1953 – Introduces first acrylic emulsion for use as paint binder

1960’s – Otto Haas passes away in early 1960 and his Fritz Otto takes over the company. Latex paint, waterborne textiles and nonwoven finished becomes very popular with the people. The company also introduces zinc and manganese combination product called Dithan M-45 Fungicide.

1970’s – The Company undergoes reorganization, also ventures into new areas like fiber and health products, which were eventually taken off from company’s product line in the late 1970’s due to its incompatibility with the type of franchises, the company had.

1980’s – The Company enters electronic chemical business, which yields good results

1990’s – The Company divests its polymethyl methacrylate which was its flagship product since the inception of the company due to low demand. But the company expands its business in growing electronic chemicals segment.

2000-Now – Company develops a product called SmartFreshSM which is used in shipping and stoprage of fruits and vegetables which works with nature’s own ripening process and maintains the freshness of fruits and vegetable.
