About the company and its History

Headquartered in Houston, Texas Continental Airlines was founded in 1934 Walter Varney as Varney Speed Lines. The airlines flew its first ever flight on July 15, 1934 from Pueblo, Colorado, United States to El Paso, Texas, United States. The company was taken over by Mueller in the first year of its inception. In July, 1936 nearly forty percent of the company’s share was bought by Robert Six under whose leadership the company ran nearly for forty years. The month of July saw another big event in the history of airline in 1937 when the airlines got its current name “Continental Airlines” on July 1, 1937. The same year company moved its headquarters from El Paso to Denver, Colorado. The airline supported United States Second World War Air Force operations by converting some of its airlines for the Air Force.

The Airlines merged with Pioneer Airlines on December 10, 1953. After nearly twenty years Continental Airlines moved its headquarters again and to Los Angeles this time in July1963. The Airlines supported national cause one more time during Vietnam War by moving American soldiers to the Orient. The Airlines underwent another merger in October, 1982 with Texas Intl. which resulted in the increase in its fleet and expansion of its service to four continents i.e. North America, South America, Australia and Asia. The year 1985 was another landmark year for the company when Continental Airlines operated first non-stop flight to Europe. The Airlines saw it’s biggest ever acquisitions in the year 1987 when it acquired Frontier Airline, New York Air and People Express also making it the 3rd largest Airline in the United States. During 90’s Continental made a record profit of $640 million in the year 1997. After the dark period of tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001 the Airline had to cut services to many cities and also downsize its employee strength. But a series of measures taken up by the Airlines thereafter brought it back on track once again gaining respect all over as one of the top ten admired companies in the world.
