Title

Gerald Tobola

Description

GERALD TOBOLA... a self taught copper artist specializes in the “Repoussé and Chasing” technique. Repoussé (French for "pushed up") is a metalwork technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side. The opposite technique to repoussé is "chasing". These two techniques are used in conjunction to create a work of art. Gerald creates unique copper designs on lamp shades, wall hangings, luminaries, etc.

"The idea came to me when I made a mesquite lamp, but was unable to find a shade I wanted. I knew all along it had to be copper. After a few months of research and a few ruined copper pieces, I completed my first shade in 2001."

Gerald also enjoys working with his favorite wood. Texas Mesquite... "I particularly prefer to use fallen or dead wood. There is no need to destroy a tree when there is an ample supply of fallen wood. Dead mesquite wood has character that is unmatched by any other wood. I expose the hidden art that Mother Nature created.
