The College of William and Mary is one of the oldest colleges in the Nation. While remaining true to its roots and values of providing students with a quality education as well as keeping enrollment low, it has keep up with the changes of time and technology. This has lead to it becoming one of the best colleges for students to earn their education in as they will develop the skills they need to be successful in their career and their personal endeavors.

History

The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia became a Charter school in 1693 under the direction of King William III and Queen Mary II. This was the formation of the second college in America. Women were not allowed to attend the college until 1918. The well recognized and honorable Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the College of William and Mary in 1967.

Reputation

The College of William and Mary is well known for the high ranking Liberal Arts programs it offers. They are dedicated to developing curriculums that allow students to search in themselves for intellectual growth through the teachings at the school. They are ranked first in the Nation for their teaching staff.

Programs

The College of William and Mary offers students a variety of degrees they can obtain in various areas of study. The degree programs include Bachelors, Masters, Doctoral, and Professional. The programs to choose from include Accounting, Business Administration, Education, Government, Philosophy, and Women’s Studies.

The most popular programs students enroll in at the College of William and Mary include Government, History, Economics, and English. It is not uncommon for many of the students who graduate from a program at the College of William and Mary to be accepted to Law School or Medical School. 75% of those students who do apply are accepted.

For the past five years, the College of William and Mary has ranked #6 in the Nation. It is ranked #2 in regards to the number of students who enroll and go on to graduate at the college.

Student Life

To remain dedicated to the students who attend the College of William and Mary, they purposely keep enrollment levels down. This shows their dedication to the students rather than just to make money because they have plenty more applicants knocking at their door than are accepted to the college. The ratio of teachers to students is only 12 to 1.

Media Attention

Due to the destruction of Hurricane Isabel in 2003, the college campus was shut down for a couple of weeks. However, students from all programs on the campus used this as an opportunity to go out and show their dedication to the town. They volunteered in a variety of ways including cooking meals and cleaning up from the damage.

In this age of computers, they are a necessity on any college campus. Intel has recognized the College of William and Mary as one of the top Unwired College Campuses in the Nation. They offer a MyNotebook program that allows students to take advantage of the latest developments in technology. Using the Lenovo ThinkPad notebook, students are able to connect to everything on campus.
