Description

Mission

Wellstone Action is a national center for training and leadership development for the progressive movement. Founded in January 2003, Wellstone Action’s mission is to honor the legacy of Paul and Sheila Wellstone by continuing their work through training, educating, mobilizing and organizing a vast network of progressive individuals and organizations.

In three years, Wellstone Action has experienced tremendous growth, adding over 108,000 members and training over 9,300 citizen activists in 29 states in political organizing skills. In addition to training, Wellstone Action engages our members in non-partisan voter mobilization efforts; lobbies Congress on behalf of mental health parity, Social Security and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act; trains domestic violence advocates to be organizers on their issue, and helps preserve the Wellstone archives for future generations. Our book, Politics the Wellstone Way: How to Elect Progressive Candidates and Win on Issues, was released in the fall of 2005.

Our Training Programs

Wellstone Action runs a variety of training programs. The centerpiece is Camp Wellstone, a dynamic weekend-long training program that teaches progressives how to win on issues and elect good candidates. We use a distinctive approach to politics, based on Paul Wellstone's success at integrating grassroots organizing, electoral organizing, progressive public policy and ethical leadership. Wellstone Action has sponsored Camp Wellstones in 29 states, training 9,300 people in the nuts and bolts of effective political action. Since 2004, 35 Camp Wellstone graduates have won elective office and thousands of others worked on campaigns or issue organizing efforts.
