History

Verizon Communications Inc. was established on June 30, 2000, in New York, incorporated in Delaware with the merger of Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp. The company began trading through the New York Stock Exchange in the same year. During the course of 20th century, the government regulations had been the strong driving force behind the formation of Verizon. With the signing of telecommunications act in 1996, the federal law of the state directed a shift to more market-based policies. This could facilitate a boom in the growth of the company. Bell Atlantic acquired GTE in 2000 giving way to the formation of Verizon. This merger was one of the largest in the business history of the United States. Verizon began trading on the U.S. Stock exchange on July 3, 2000 under the symbol VZ. Earlier in 1991, Bell Atlantic and UK-based Vodafone AirTouch Plc had made an agreement to create a new wireless business under a single brand name and common digital technology. This joint venture in the wireless realm was approved in a matter of six months and began operations as Verizon wireless. Before Cingular Wireless acquired AT&T Wireless in 2004, this was the nation’s single largest wireless company.
