- In Buddhist tradition, the practise of remembering acts of goodness is highly important because it helps bring into our consciousness the motivation behind that good deed and all the positive thoughts associated with it to move a person in such a way. For example, if a person remembers a past action such as feeding a hungry child, he may also recollect the reason behind it. This may be a wishing for the child to be free from hunger and so moved by compassion (karuna) a person takes a course of action that leads to the child's nourishment. Thus, a sequence of positive thought is initiated when we remember our good deeds in this way and it is like doing the virtuous act all over again. A mind in this thought-process is protected from unwholesome thought and is more likely to accomplish further meritorious action. In Pali, remembering acts of goodness is known as para cetana (recollection of virtues).
