Description

A new way to create and control emulsions has been developed at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. The creators call this a "disruptive" technology because among other uses, they say it can be used to greatly enhance the extraction of oil in those fields that still have a lot remaining, but must be removed by water injection or by other means. The tech lets them separate the oil and water easily at the surface. A short review of the chemical, called now "Pepfactants", and a link to their paper abstract.

Another "in kind" follow up to the Norwegian recent large meteorite hit is this article about what scientists are actually working on that might work to deflect something large and incoming. It is one thing to just say something like "fire a nuke missile at it", but another one to actually contemplate how big a charge and how fast and where you should hit it, etc. There is a lot of large scale background computational work involved, so some of this research is being done at Sandia National Laboratories, using the "Red Storm" super computer.

A company says (press release) they have a new design angle for conventional type lead acid batteries, using an inner core of "reticulated vitreous carbon" to bump up the surface area on the plates and with the result of higher amp hours rating and much lower weight. They still use a tin/lead alloy, but much less than conventionals.
