TEMARI - Center for Asian and Pacific Arts
Description
Yutaka Fujioka will give a talk about Japanese calligraphy, the art of shodo, and the origins of kanji, or Chinese characters. Shodo includes ancient styles of kanji as well as kana, developed in Japan. It is both a discipline and an art form that can be practiced for a lifetime.
Fujioka Sensei will demonstrate the use of a large brush on thin washi, Japanese paper. Observe as he dances with the brush, all the while controlling the flow of ink on paper, creating visual music. Follow the rhythm of his strokes, bursts of energy followed by silent contemplation. Appreciate the interplay of negative and positive space.
Originally from Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture, Fujioka Sensei studied with the renowned calligrapher, Asami Sozan, founder of the Ehime Shogei Bunka Kyokai. He has been a member of professional calligraphy associations, including the Dokuritsu Shojindan of Tokyo and the Hotenkai of Ehime.
