When the Evangelical Formosan Church (EFC) began in the 1960’s, God placed a burden to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in its leaders. The church longs to make evangelizing, sharing the Good News, the utmost priority in each EFC member. It is out of love and obedience to our Lord Jesus’ command, as stated in Matthew 28:19-20, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” There is no greater calling than to lead others to follow Jesus and His commands.
The Great Commission grows a yearning in the EFC to see the island nation of Taiwan, their homeland, come to saving faith in our Lord. With a total population of 22 million, only 3 percent calls on the name of Christ. An overwhelming number of Taiwanese continue to live in darkness—facing eternity without God. For this reason, the pastors and leaders of EFC affirm the words of the apostle Paul in Romans 10:14-15 for the island nation, “How then can they call on the One they have not heard in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
In the early 1990’s, Rev. Felix Liu of EFC Los Angeles envisioned young people, especially those of Taiwanese descent, returning to Taiwan with a mission to share the Good News. With their passion for Christ and their proficiency in English, they can reach out to the youth of Taiwan. Since then, over 300 young people have answered the call and committed themselves to summer mission trips every July and August.
