The Seattle Independent Media Center is a collection of independent media organizations and journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage. The center was initially established for providing coverage of the World Trade Organization (WTO) protests in Seattle in 1999. The center provided up-to-the-minute reports, photos, audio and video footage through its website. The center also produced its own newspaper which was distributed in Seattle and to other cities by the internet. Through a decentralized and autonomous network, hundreds of media activists setup independent media centers in cities all over the world.
