Description

Here’s a brief biography and resume. Born in New York City, I grew up in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn. My family summered at Shinnecock Bay on eastern Long Island, where I acquired a passion for boats and the seashore, as described in the sailing memoir, Cruising with Catullus.

From 1966-70 I attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. I was still living nearby when I met Timothy Murphy in 1973. Shortly afterward, I moved with my new partner to Minneapolis, Minnesota. We resided there until 1980. When Tim joined his father’s business in Fargo, North Dakota, I tagged along. By 1988 Tim and I had built a big house beside the Red River of the North. We shared the place with two labrador retrievers, a cranky black cat, and a temporary house-guest who stayed for seven years. There I wrote the sci-fi novels Elixir and The Pearls of Poritrin.

Tim and I first bareboated among the British Virgin Islands early in 1994. Within two years we bought the Catana catamaran whose acquisition and loss inspired much verse and prose. Beginning in 1996, the skipper published several volumes of poetry, much edited by crew. I’ve also written many poems of my own, selecting the best for Man Overboard.
