Fabric Prewashing, the Pros and Cons
Some quilters never pre-wash their fabrics. I nearly always prewash, because I don't want any surprises when I take a quilt I've spent hours and hours designing and constructing out of the washing machine for the first time. A few basic prewashing pros and cons will help you decide if you'd rather wash your fabrics before using them or start cutting and sewing them right off the bolt. If you decide not to prewash, be sure to perform a bleed test on fabrics before sewing them into a quilt, just to make sure their dyes are stable.
Learn How to Foundation (paper) Piece
No matter what you call it--foundation piecing or paper piecing--it's a traditional method that's had a dramatic rebirth since the early 1990's. Miniature quilt enthusiasts were among the first to "rediscover" foundation piecing, since when it's done correctly blocks are perfect every time, no matter how small their patches are. Get foundation basics behind you first, read a few tips, then jump right in and make an easy log cabin block.
Learn to Make Marbled Fabrics
Hand marbling is the art of floating paints on top of a thick solution, called size, manipulating those paints into patterns, then transferring the pattern to an object by placing the object on top of the paints. You can marble anything that fits in your tray, from paper to tennis shoes, but we'll focus on making original cotton quilting fabrics. Marbling is one of those crafts that takes a whole lot more time to get ready to do than to actually do, but when you're finished you'll have a stack of one-of-a-kind fabrics.
