History

R.R. Donnelley & Sons had its beginning in a small way in 1864. A young man from Hamilton, Ontario, Richard R. Donnelley established a press in the name of Church, Goodman, and Donnelley--Steam Printers in Chicago. The shop succeeded moderately. But in the Chicago fire of 1871, Donnelley lost all his business. He started again and this time it was a success. He worked hard and due to his far sightedness he was able to make good progress in the business. Because of technological advancement, artistic and better quality of the printing job, he started to get more and more business.

In 1886 he started printing telephone book which was a good business decision. It brought him more business. He also did mail order catalog printing for local firms like Sears, Roebuck & Company. Richard's son Thomas E. Donnelley took charge of the company in 1890 and took it to further heights.

In 1921, Donnelley opened his printing press. By 1928 the company started printing a new magazine Time. The Great Depression was a bad event for the business also but still it was able to stay in business. Donnelley constantly tried to improve the process and bring into new technology to the work. This helped it advance and withstand competition. This also helped them win contract with companies like the Time magazine for new Life magazine. It constantly upgraded its technology. Donnelley in 1956 went public. It had at that time more than 160 presses.

1971 was a bad year for Donnelley as Look folded in this year. Life circulation was reduced. So the company had to lay off 700 people and was about to cut 400 more. In 1972 Life stopped publishing. Donnelley lost past customers but gained new ones. In 1974 it shifted from its old practices of four colour extended runs. It started small initial press runs. In 1980s it put emphasis more on the small press run. It gained lot of small publishers through aggressive marketing.

It passed many problematic phase and time. Sometimes it lost and sometimes it gained. But it worked towards the future and so, it is still standing there.
