Bill Rotsler 1926 - 1997

William Rotsler was well known in science fiction fandom as a prolific and distinctive cartoonist, for which work he twice received the Hugo for Best Fan Artist. He was also an author, sculptor, and film-maker. He was also a LASFS member of long standing, known for his cartoons and story-telling.

Bill Rotsler's novels included Patron of the Arts (1974), To the Land of the Electric Angel (1976), Zandra (1978), and The Far Frontier (1980). As a member of SFWA, he located the fossils, crystals and stones for the Nebula Award™ trophies. Bill had been fighting cancer for some time; he died quietly in his sleep on the morning of October 18th 1997, of complications from radiation therapy, at the southern California home of his friend Paul Turner.

A memorial service for the five-time Hugo winner (including the 1996 Retro-Hugo) was held in the Freehafer Hall at the LASFS Clubhouse beginning at noon on 26 October 1997. In lieu of flowers, Bill wished for donations to be made to the SFWA Medical Fund.
