Description
T he history of mechanical music begins in the Flanders. An ingenious bell ringer invents a cylinder perforated with pins which operate cams that in turn strike bells.
T he mechanical singing bird is invented by the Jaquet-Droz brothers, clockmakers from La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1848, the manufacture of singing birds is perfected by Blaise Bontems in his Parisian workshop to such a degree that it has remained unchanged. Barrel organs become more popular.
A ntoine Favre, a clockmaker from Geneva, replaces the bells by combs with pre-tuned metal teeth, which produce more varied and clearer sounds. Numerous musical objects are produced.
