Title

IMC hardtop hoist manufacturer for removable hardtop convertibles

Description

In the summer of 1978 a good friend bought a new Mercedes 450 SL. The dealer had given him something called a "Sling" to help him with his removable hardtop. He looked it over and determined that the webbing and hooks on the harness portion could damage his paint and tear the weather stripping on his brand new Mercedes hardtop so he didn't use it. (Turns out, this "Sling" design was made for the early Thunderbirds and was made adjustable so it could be used for "all hardtops". Adjustable harnesses can still be found because they're cheap and easy to produce (imagine, only one part number!) but they still damage paint because of the webbing being very tight against it and they still tear weather stripping with their hooks - some even become accidentally unhooked!) Anyway, we worked out a different system using parts of a luggage rack that clamped to the drip rail on the hardtop. Nothing touched the paint or the weather stripping and the hardtop balanced without having to adjust a thing. A neighbor also had an SL, so I made another one for him. The neighbor just happened to work in advertising and produced a little ad that ran in Los Angeles Magazine (see photo).

Twenty-three years later, we've produced more than 50,000 hoists, installing more than a 1000 of them, and we've made over 18,000 transporters. I've watched many owners use the hoists I've installed in their garages and this experience has been a great way to make sure our designs are simple and safe to use. The strategy at IMC has always been to produce equipment developed with the hardtop owner in mind - as opposed to making something that's cheap and easy to produce and risk dropping and damaging valuable hardtops.
