The Pennsylvania State University, which is also known as Penn State, is a land grant, state-related university. The University boasts of 24 campuses located throughout the state, which also includes a virtual World Campus. There are more than 84,000 students in the university, which places it amongst the ten biggest public universities of the United States. Penn State offers more than 160 majors courses to its students at the graduate level.

History

The Pennsylvania State University was originally an agricultural college founded on 22 February 1855. From there it has a come a long way, and today it is considered to be one of the world-class learning institution. Its original goal was to apply scientific principles to farming, which was a radical shift from the traditional set of courses based on mathematics, classical and rhetoric languages. Today the goal of The Pennsylvania State University is an expanding mission of providing excellent education, research facilities, and also public services.

Colleges

The university boasts of 24 campuses. The largest of them, University Park, has 13 colleges. They are, College of Agricultural Sciences, Smeal College of Business, College of Arts and Architecture, College of Communications, College of Education, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, College of Health and Human Development, College of Engineering, College of the Liberal Arts, Graduate School, College of Information Sciences and Technology, Eberly College of Science and Schreyer Honors College. They also have commonwealth campuses and special mission campuses.

Programs and Courses

There are around 400 programs offered at undergraduate level. Some of them are agricultural business, biomedical engineering, business administration, computer engineering, criminal justice, electric engineering and technology, human development and family studies, information technology etc. While at the graduate level we have around 100 courses include accounting courses, administration of justice, aerospace engineering, agricultural science, arts and architecture, astronomy and astrophysics, biochemistry and molecular biology course, educational theory and policy, electrical engineering, human development and family studies amongst others.

Apart from these, the university also offers medical education and has college of medicine and education and training. There are a few executive programs under the Smeal College of Business Administration. The college also has provisions for distance learning programs and continuing education after a gap. Other programs include emergency preparedness, legal education and international programs.

The university also encourages many research programs and was one of the founding members of the Worldwide Universities Network, a partnership of 17 research encouraging universities around the world. It offers funds and promotes collaborations between different universities for exchange of faculty members as well as graduate students.

Student Life

The colleges have an excellent library system and have an exhaustive collection of books and other reference materials on almost every subject. The students enjoy lots of extra curricular activities in the campus. There are a few community resources like State College Area Community Theatre, Pennsylvania Dance Theatre, The State College Choral Society, Folk Music Calendar and Nittany Valley Symphony. There is also a center for arts and craft. Apart from these the colleges keep organizing various art exhibitions, musical concerts, theatre workshops etc, round the year.

The intercollegiate athletics is the highlight of Pennsylvania State University. Many sporting events and competitions are organized and stress is given on overall physical and mental fitness of the students. The sporting facilities include, Beaver stadium, golf courses, swimming pools, Holuba Hall, Football building, Jeffrey field for soccer etc. They have excellent work out facilities for students and faculty and also offer aerobics and other fitness classes.

Apart from that, the university provides some other facilities like business services that include travel services, on campus hotel service, housing, food, multimedia print center etc.
