Title

Long Lines

Description

As with many things in our midwestern world, Long Lines came to be by means of the farmland that surrounds us all. In 1941, Arthur Long used the mortgage on farm ground in Story County, Iowa, left to him after his father's death, to purchase the exchanges of Sergeant Bluff, Salix, and Sloan, which he renamed "Northwest Iowa Telephone".

At that time, telephone operators provided more than just the connection of the calls. They timed long distance calls and calculated rates to bill the customer, dispatched fireman to the location of the fire, and provided custom calling features such as call forwarding and call alert.

The end of party lines in the early 1970's meant no more listening in on your neighbors' calls. But more importantly, private lines meant conducting home and business matters confidentially.
