Pier 1 is a publicly owned company that is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the trading symbol PIR. Our fiscal year begins in March and extends through February. We utilize 5-4-4 (week) quarterly accounting periods with the fiscal year of 52 weeks ending on the Saturday nearest the last day of February. Our net sales for the fiscal year 2004 which ended on March 1, 2004 were $1.86 billion.
Pier 1 acquired Cargo Furniture and Home in 2001. Established in 1981, Cargo Furniture and Home was originally a family-focused selection of casual furniture. We made the decision to change the concept to Cargokids, a specialty retailer offering value-oriented, fashionable children's furniture and accessories. In late 2004, we decided to change all existing Cargokids locations to Pier 1 Kids stores. This decision was made after a test run of the name change resulted in an immediate positive reaction from customers. Pier 1 Kids is expected to expand the chain to 300 stores by the end of the decade.
